Chair Push-Up Test
The chair push-up fitness test is a measure of upper body strength and endurance. This test is easy and quick test to perform, with easily available equipment. As it is easier to perform than the standard push-up, it would be suitable for children and those of lower fitness levels.
Chair Push-Up TestThis variation of the push-up test requires the participant to perform the maximum number of push-ups as possible in 30 seconds, while leaning on a chair. See the general push-up test procedure.
equipment required
A stopwatch or clock with a second-hand is required for timing 30 seconds. A stable chair. Masking tape or chalk to mark the floor.
preparation
The purpose of the push-up test and the test procedures should be fully explained to the participant before starting. Make sure that they have no pre-existing ailments that will affect the test result or will get worse by participating in the test. Record basic information about the subject, such as age, height, body weight, gender and test conditions. Get them to perform a warm-up including upper body stretches and swinging of the arms. Explain the push-up technique required and get the participant to practice a few reps so that you can give feedback about what is required.
procedure
- Wear shoes for better grip on the floor, an ensure the chair is stable and secure (e.g. place it against a wall so it cannot move).
- Determine the placement of the feet. Lie face up with the soles of both feet level with the front edge of the chair. Then mark a line on the floor (using chalk or masking tape) at the level of your elbows.
- Stand up, face the chair, and position your toes behind the marked line.
- Reach forward and grasp the handles of the chair, or place your hands on the front edge of the chair shoulder-width apart.
- The starting position is with the arms straightened, with the body and legs in a straight line. Arms should be at right angles to your torso.
- The lower position is with the chest reaching between the armrests, or touching the front edge of the chair.
- When ready, perform as many chair push-ups as possible in 30 seconds.
- Do not count any repetition that is not performed with correct form. Maintain a straight body line throughout the entire test. A valid push-up to count requires the chest to touch the front edge of the chair in the lower position, and to push back up to the starting position with the arms are fully extended.
scoring
Record the total number of correctly completed push-ups in one minute. The distance of the feet from the chair, the chair type, and technique used, should also be recorded.
