How many can push-ups can you do?

Most Non-Stop Push-ups

The official world record for the greatest number of continuous push ups was set by Minoru Yoshida of Japan in October 1980, when he managed an astonishing total of 10,507 push ups in a single effort. This incredible performance of consecutive push-ups surpassed the previous record of 7,650 push ups, which had been achieved only a few years earlier in 1977 by Henry C. Marshal of the United States.

Not long after Yoshida’s achievement, Guinness World Records decided to discontinue the category of non-stop push ups, in which competitors were not allowed to take any breaks at all. Instead, they shifted their attention to a new category that measured the most push ups completed within a twenty four hour period, where participants were permitted to take as many rest breaks as they needed.

Correct Technique

The assessors at the Guinness World Record requires that record setters perform the push-up with a specific technique, which is essentially what we describe as a standard push-up. Participants must keep the body straight throughout (i.e. no bending at the knees or waist), and the body must be lowered until at least a 90-degree angle is attained at the elbows. The body is then raised until the arms are straight, although the elbows do not need to be locked.
