How to Perform a Clap Push-Up
The clap push-up is one of the many variations of the classic push-up procedure. In this technique, a normal push-up is performed but at the peak of the push-up, push yourself up off the ground and quickly clap in midair.

Equipment Required
none
Starting Position
Begin in a standard push-up position with your hands placed slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and your feet set a little apart for balance. Your body should form a straight line from head to heels, with your core engaged and glutes tight. Keep your head neutral, looking slightly ahead rather than straight down.
Movement
Lower your chest toward the floor under control until your elbows reach about a 90-degree angle. Then, explosively push through your hands so your upper body leaves the ground. At the top of the movement, quickly bring your hands together to clap before returning them to the floor to catch your body. Absorb the impact by bending your elbows as you land, and smoothly transition into the next repetition.
Key Tips
- Focus on explosive power during the push phase.
- Keep your core tight to avoid sagging hips.
- Land softly with control to reduce strain on your wrists and elbows.
- Start with standard push-ups or incline clap push-ups if building up to this variation.
The Workout
Repeat this action as many times as required. See Push-Up Workouts for example training programs.
